As it turns out, the Village has a new-found opportunity to provide a kayak launch ramp this summer, but funding and approval will likely be a challenge.

Parks & Recreation Commission Chairman Dianne Richter recently discovered that our own Michigan Lake Products sells a bolt-on kayak launch ramp that would fit our existing floating dock in the Upper Harbor. It costs $7,500.

Would be great to have it in place this summer. Can it happen?

Changes affect mainly farmer's markets and restaurants.

Small winemakers could offer tastings and sell their wine at farmers markets around Michigan under legislation headed to Gov. Rick Snyder.

The bill approved 37-0 by the state Senate Wednesday would require small winemakers wanting to do business at a farmers market to pay $25 for a permit.

Another measure sent to Snyder would let regular bars and restaurants fill growlers of craft beer for patrons to consume elsewhere. Current law only allows brewpubs and microbreweries to refill growlers for off-site consumption. Record-Eagle

An outstanding performance at Peterman tonight

Directed by Jeff Cobb, Canticum Novum (a new choral group whose name means New Song) performed an ambitious and entertaining repertoire at Peterman tonight. It was remarkable. Cobb is a master of the mechanics of choral singing, so he can focus on the emotional aspects and nuances such as dynamics. And he delivers. The chorus is terrific, very professional, expressive and downright entertaining.

The musical choices are excellent — from the 16th century world of Palaestrina to the modern work of Eric Whitacre to the humor of P.D.Q. Bach. And we heard two spirited compositions by Cobb himself, Absalom and Go Down, Moses.

MUSICAL PAIRS

Verdi – Va, Pensiero
Palestrina – Super flumina Babylonis

Mozart – Placido e il Mar
Swingle – Allegro from “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik“

Brahms – Liebeslieder Waltzes (#11, 12, 13, 14)
PDQ Bach – Liebeslieder Polkas (selections)

Randall Thompson – Frostiana (selections)
Eric Whitacre – Sleep

Cobb – Absalom
Cobb – Go Down, Moses

And an encore — another selection from Frostiana

Two other performances of Musical Pairs are coming up:

Friday, June 14, 7:30 p.m., Milliken Auditorium

Saturday, June 15, 7:30 p.m., Suttons Bay Congretational Church

If you couldn’t attend in Elk Rapids, it’s well worth going to a concert at Traverse City or Suttons Bay.
