Do we really need a council of 5 people to advise the President about this…..MORE WASTED MONEY!

The answer “yes” is not focused on “more wasted money” but on the need to narrow, and eventually even out, the educational gap that Native students lag behind in when compared to other races. The NACIE was also in existence with President Bush (and perhaps before his Presidency as well), and President Obama carries forth the same recognition that those from Indian Country know best when trying to meet the educational needs, and obtain the educational achievements, for Native students. I am not asking you to understand and agree, but I felt a response was needed, and a respectful one at that. I will say, for a public NACIE budget of $44,000, I feel that the equation (NACIE work product/impact on tribal youth vs. impact/success of Native students) is extremely lopsided for the wokr needing to be done. I am definitely honored to receive this Presidential Appointment, and politics aside, I stand firm to my commitment to work hard. Megwetch (thank you) for your comment and if you would like more information on NACIE, please contact me at the Grand Traverse Band’s main phone number: 231-534-7103. I would be glad, and open, to answering any questions you may further have.

Good response, Derek. Given that education reform across the boards is getting national attention, it’s sensible to focus on Native American education, too.
