Grooming Great Lakes beaches

Property owners on the Great Lakes can now groom their beaches without permission from the state. The governor has signed a law. Environmental groups say it will hurt the lakes.

A federal permit is still required, but before this week a property owner needed a permit from the state to mow or rake the beach near the water’s edge. A property rights group based in Bay City fought that requirement for years and finally prevailed with lawmakers in Lansing.    IPR

A delightful Evening on River Street

Tonight was a mixture of food, fun and frolic. There was bratwurst, wonton, pizza, ribs and more. Shoestring the clown entertained the kids. Fire Chief Pete Vandenberge and coworkers let folks dress up in fireman gear, while kids “drove” the fire engine. The Three B’s performed a wide variety of music. Lead singer and bassist Larry Ball has become a world-class entertainer, while backed up by the other B’s. Catherine Allegrina was on hand to promote the Historic Elk Rapids Town Hall Society, and the Lions sold raffle tickets.

A good time was had by all.
