IPR has been exploring northern Michigan landmarks. And for this next story we travel to Elk Rapids. Landmark buildings are sometimes beautiful…but sometimes they simply tell a story.
On the river in Elk Rapids is a non-descript structure that is connected to the town’s earliest settlement days. A proposal by a popular brewing company to reuse it has spiked interest in the site. But opinion over its historic significance is sharply divided. IPR

If you once played golf and would like to start again with a relaxed and fun experience, join us at Elk Rapids Golf Club. Beginning adult golfers are also welcome. We’ll have clinics on driving, pitching/chipping and putting taught by some of our best member players. Then, we’ll play 9 holes of scramble golf and retire to the 10th hole.
There is no cost to participate. We just want you back playing in northern Michigan, especially in Elk Rapids at the only lakeside course in the area.

UPDATE: David Brooks in NYT
Two of America’s most prestigious universities are uniting around a seemingly controversial idea: that online education is an opportunity and not a threat for residential colleges.
On Wednesday, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in Cambridge, Mass., announced that they’re forming a new organization called edX to deliver online courses to learners around the world. Each school said it will invest $30 million in launching the project. CSM
