U.S. cities drive the economy

In a world of rising urbanization, the degree of economic vigor that the economy of the United States derives from its cities is unmatched by any other region of the globe. Large US cities, defined here as those with 150,000 or more inhabitants, generated almost 85 percent of the country’s GDP in 2010, compared with 78 percent for large cities in China and just under 65 percent for those in Western Europe during the same period. In the next 15 years, the 259 large US cities are expected to generate more than 10 percent of global GDP growth—a share bigger than that of all such cities in other developed countries combined.  Study by McKinsie Global Institute

Notes on Council Meeting

Riverwalk Grill
Zoning Administrator Steve Ravezzani has contacted Village attorney about sending a formal letter to the property owner. Owner contacted Ravezzani to say that a kitchen inventory is now complete and demolition will start soon. The owner has plans to rebuild.

Handicap Parking near Corner Druggist
Responding to a citizen request, the DDA considered the request for a handicap parking space. But such a space is very expensive and limits the use of the space extremely. DDA recommended a time-limited space on River Street or Cedar instead. Council is considering this recommendation.

Wireless on Water Tower
Agri-Valley Broadband proposed to lease space on the water tower for wireless broadband (Internet) equipment. The service would be marketed under the name “My Spot.” The advocate stated that a similar setup in Traverse City has a 10 mile range. Council is considering the proposal.

Dexter Street Use
Harbor Commission member Joe Fisher recommended that the Village “put it on the market.” He clarified that he meant all but the current dock space, although he stated that it might be good if a few slips might accompany the sale. Councilman A letter about ERC3 from Paul Hresko was read to the public. Schuler was considered about attorney expenses that were being paid for by taxpayers. The Subcommittee will try to meet this week to deliberate.

Village Manager Search
Search is ongoing. One recent candidate was considered but rejected. The job opening will be reposted.
