Interesting article in Bloomberg – Joel Stein has Four Accountants – an excerpt:

This year I really wanted to find out: What level accountant do I need? Can I do my returns myself using websites that promise to guide me through the process? Can H&R Block (HRB) handle it? Is my current accountant great? Or would a high-end accountant know all the loopholes and get me so much money back that his fee would be worth it?    Bloomberg

This article had particular relevance for me, because we just stopped using a tax-preparation firm and switched to Turbo Tax, on the surface saving a lot of money. But I share an anxiety ridden present with Joel Stein. Is what I just did good enough?

Here’s an overview of what we did. We used last year’s filed forms and data, then plugged the similar 2012 data into Turbo Tax. The end result was close to last year’s so it feels good. According to Turbo Tax, our audit risk is low. We’ll see.

Are our local tree farms participating?

A program that provides free Christmas trees to military families and includes west Michigan tree farms as among its participants is being honored at the White House on April 11 as a finalist in the Joining Forces Community Challenge.    MLive
